Advantages and Disadvantages of Ink Jet Printers

By Dominick Rivoli

Ink jet printers are popular in today's world. They are unique in how they work. Thousands of ink droplets are expelled onto the paper to create the image. A variety of styles are available, so you can choose one that will most suit your printing needs.

As with any product, there are advantages and disadvantages to ink jet printers. It is always good to have knowledge of these issues before making your final purchase. They do have many compelling benefits.

  • A Low Price Point
  • High Quality Images
  • Easy to Operate
  • Quieter Than Other Options
  • Fast With No Warm Up Time

That said, there are some serious disadvantages that have to be weighed into your final decision of which printer to buy; print speed is slow, ink cartridges are expensive to replace, and they don't work well in high volume situations. The following information will give you some in depth information that can help you decide if an ink jet printer is right for your needs.

Advantages

The low cost is a huge advantage when it comes to selecting a printer. Of all the printers available, ink jet printers are the least expensive. Keep in mind that quality equals price. The cheapest ones produce the lowest quality images, but even an expensive ink jet printer is more affordable than other printer options. That said, recent ink jet technology is allowing the cheaper versions to still create decent images.

These printers have high quality output, printing fine and smooth details. They can create documents or images that are top notch. Modern technology lets you create effects that make the images more vivid than on other printers. In addition, ink jet printers are capable of printing in vivid color, good for printing pictures.

The key advantage of an this type of printer for many is that it is so easy to use. It is also reasonably fast to run. There is a shorter time delay between each document that is sent to an ink jet printer than with a laser printer. There is also a shorter delay in the beginning of the process of printing. There is no warm up time, not requiring time to heat up like a laser printer would.

Many people choose these printers for the mere fact that they are quieter than a dot matrix printer. If space is an issue, ink jet printers will take up less desk top area than a laser printer.

Disadvantages

On an inkjet printer, the print head is less durable. They are prone to clogging and damage. This could lead to Ink Jet Printer Repairs. They are not good for high volume printing either.

The big disadvantage to an ink jet printer is that it's expensive to replace ink cartridges. Cartridge costs can actually exceed the cost of the machine over time. What you save on the initial investment is lost when you consider cartridge replacement expenses.

Replacing cartridges may bring on additional problems. The printer may become clogged with ink, a common issue. They have cleaning cycles, but you still need to replace the cartridge after several uses. There are companies that will refill and service the cartridge through Ink Jet Printer Maintenance Plans so you don't have to replace them. It saves money, but it takes extra time.

Printing speed is not as fast with this printer as it is with a laser printer. They are generally printers that are only good for small volumes of printed documents.

Be aware that with this type of printer there are problems that may arise from the ink. Ink bleeding is a common complaint. Ink can be carried sideways, causing a bleeding effect on some papers. If using the documents and images you print for business presentations, know that you cannot use highlighter marker on ink jet printouts.

These printers use an Aqueous ink that is sensitive to water. Even a small drop of water can cause blurring. Once a document or image has been created, it needs time to dry. This will delay the delivery process. There is a risk of smudging until it completely dries.

Xerox Solid Ink

Xerox Solid Ink
by Gary Jones

Xerox have been around since the early 1900’s and were the leading printing manufacturer in the 60’s generating over $500 million in revenue due to their successful Xerox 914 machine. Now Xerox is looking to pioneer a relatively new printing technology in Solid Ink.

What is Solid Ink?

Solid Ink technology was developed by Xerox in 1991 and technology utilizes solid wax ink sticks instead of "liquid ink" and "toner powder" typically used in printers. Solid ink is similar to crayon or wax substance which makes it cost-effective, produces incredible print quality, easy to use and it’s good for the environment.

How does Solid Ink Printer process work?

Step 1 - Preparing to Print

The solid ink printer doesn’t need addition consumables like that of drum units or transfer belts that would be normally needed for a Laser Printer. The printing process begins with the maintenance roller, which quickly applies a microscopic layer of oil to a heated drum unit. This is a simple, reliable printing mechanism which can last up to 30,000 prints.

Step 2 - Single Pass Imaging

Solid Ink utilizes a full-width print head which gives the printer a high speed image transfer.

Step 3 - Image Transfer

Paper is then rapidly fed between the drum and a roller, which transfers the wax to the paper. The process is quicker than a laser printer. There is also no Fuser Unit, which can use a lot of energy to heat up.

Step 4 - Ink Bonding

The ink penetrates the paper’s fibres as it’s transferred from the drum; it does this without the spreading of liquid ink-jets or the scattering of toner. The ink cools and solidifies immediately, which forms a strong permanent bond to the paper. The whole print process can take as little as 5 seconds.

The wax doesn’t smear and gives a more vibrant colour quality. The great thing about solid ink is that it can print on a wider range of media (paper) than liquid ink-jet or toner.

Step 5 - Reloading the Solid Ink

With Solid Ink you can reload or remove the ink sticks without taking the printer offline. A benefit in using Ink Sticks is less waste packaging and less waste ink by-products. As the ink sticks are small and compact, they do not come in big packaging nor have plastic containers.

Solid Ink Advantages
  • Print quality – is considered to be excellent with lively colours due to the way the solid ink printers process puts the ink onto the page
  • Different Media Types – Solid Ink printers can print on many different types of media including recycled. Laser and Inkjet printers depend on specific media for getting the best quality
  • Compatible Products – Compatible ink sticks are available and they’re much cheaper than the original xerox counterparts.
  • Waste – A great thing about ink sticks is the is no waste other than the packaging. So there are no big plastic empty toner cartridges or ink cartridges to dispose of responsibly.
So now you know what a Solid Ink is and how a solid ink printer works.

CISS - Continuous Ink Supply System

CISS - Continuous Ink Supply System
by Mitchell Fenger

What is Sublimation Printing Process?

Sublimation printing is a very simple two to three step process which depends on sublimation ink, heat and pressure. The impressive point of this advanced technique of digital imaging is that it converts solid colors into gaseous state without converting them to liquid, therefore maintaining the image quality and giving output that looks just like original object.

You will find a huge collection of sublimation ink and sublimation cartridges giving you finest quality digital and textile imaging. The sublimation printing process brought a drastic change and revolution in digital and textile imaging industry. The out of the box approach of using sublimation printing process speed up and refreshed the designing and imaging concepts.

CISS stands for Continuous Ink Supply System; it consists of three major parts:

1- Ink Tanks

2- Similar to original printer cartridges

3- Ink Tube, which is use to supply ink to the cartridges

The process is quite simple; the ink is continuously supplied to the cartridges through ink tube from the exterior tanks. It saves you from the hassle of visiting computer store frequently and abides you to buy the conventional branded cartridges which are quite expensive.

The best part of using CISS is that, there are some companies that are manufacturing CISS for all models of Epson, HP, Brother and Canon ink-jet printers. It is astonishing fact that using the conventional cartridges that are provided with the branded printers a user is paying 20-30 times higher price per printout, therefore CISS is such a blessing and can be used by installing within two-three simple steps and filling the provided ink in the tanks.

Simple Steps to Install CISS in Epson

There few very simple steps to follow for installing CISS in your Epson printer:

Bring all the accessories at your printer table and check for any air in the printing tubes.

Check the printer for nozzle test, it is recommended to print nozzle test sheet

If your printer is working perfectly, take out a colored printout before you install CISS.

Place the CISS on right side of the printer and keep the air plugs out and install the air filters.

Choose Main menu ->maintenance->cartridge change->cartridge change tools->next step->next step->confirm

Take the cartridge out by lifting up cartridge cover and opening it through screw driver.

Take out the Epson cartridge inside the printer and move the cartridge carrier to the left, now install the CISS cartridge into the printer and adjust the cartridge at the right place.

It is very important to move the button chip at the right place otherwise the CISS will not be recognized by the printer.

In order to check the tube length move the cartridge carrier to the left and then to the right side and verify that the ink tube falls on paper board.

If there is any problem in the tube length you can adjust it by shortening or increasing its size, the sticker can also be adjusted to prevent tube from falling.

Carefully watch the sticker it should not squeeze the ink tube when the printer cover or paper cover is closed.

Now plug in the printer wire, close the printer cover and take a test printout also check if the printer makes any noise.

Goulet Q&A Episode 12, Troubleshooting Your Fountain Pens- Ink Nouveau

www.GouletPens.com www.InkNouveau.com
This week's Q&A was actually a topic that I broke out from last week's (Using Your Fountain Pens). I ended up getting so many troubleshooting questions that I split it into a separate video, which is what I made for today. I can easily see troubleshooting as a periodically recurring topic, so it'll be interesting for me to see how you like today's video.

1) Kathie M.- Facebook (2:07):
How much ink evaporation is "normal?" When should we start looking at the integrity of the seals?

2) Helen O.- Facebook (4:54):
Yes. Kathie asked what I wondered. I put ink in my ahab pen. Then I didn't use it and picked it up about a week later; empty. Can it disappear like that- or is my memory bad?

3) Anna W.- Facebook (7:25):
Do pens leak more at high altitude? I live at 5280' and find my pens dribble into the cap fairly often. Even those that never leave my desk. It happens across the board with brands and inks.

4) Michelle B.- Facebook (9:18):
Why does this happen - I've had a couple different C/C pens completely empty the entire converter of ink into the lid/general vicinity overnight.

5) Diane- email (10:52):
In the past, I have read questions on FPN regarding cleaning the cap of a pen after changing colors. Is it possible (or necessary) to do this for a Pilot VP? If so, how would one go about checking to see if it was needed and how would it be done?

6) Roxanne R.- Facebook (12:53):
I bought a converter with my Lamy Al-Star, my first fountain pen. It's awesomely fantastic, but I do wonder: The converter seemed to pull up so very little ink compared to the space available to fill. Is it always this way, or is there a way to coax it to fill up more completely, or did I do something totally wrong? I believe I kept the fill hole submerged.

7) Christine D.- Facebook (16:49):
I have a Pilot Metropolitan (love it!) with the squeezie converter. I've used it lots, but this last time, the pen was dripping ink every few days - just a little drip. When I went to clean it, there were drops of ink all over the inside of the barrel. Do you think there's an issue with the converter? or perhaps the ink? user error?

8) Vintage Flex Fountain Pens & Accessories- Facebook (18:42):
When using an older hard rubber eyedropper pen, sometimes there can be a slight leak where the threaded section inserts into the barrel. I have found that coating the threaded section with beeswax works well. Can you recommend a better solution?

9) Ted- Ink Nouveau (19:52):
I carry my fps in my shirt pocket (clipped, tip up) every day, but some times I leave them there without use for hours and they do not start so well--and under a rush need this is inconvenient. Other than the design feature of a Vanishing Point, and other than putting them in a pocket loose and cap down (I lean over a lot and don't want pens falling out), what can you suggest that I do?

10) Angel L.- Ink Nouveau (22:18):
How do I prevent muscle pain when using flex pens like Noodler's Ahab? Is it normal for it to hurt after a while or should I invest in a better, softer flex nib pen?

11) Blue Moon- Ink Nouveau (25:32):
3 Questions for next Q&A - all about the TWSBI.
1. I'm interested in the medium nib. What happened in the last shipment? Everything came but that one.
2. I read on FPGeeks (an October, 2013 article) that TWSBI is fixing the cracking issues - http://fpgeeks.com/2013/10/big... - Is the shipment that you just received (and the medium that I hope you'll soon get) part of the ones that are fixed or are they from the old batch?
3. What's the deal with TWSBI? What I mean by that is that people are crazy about them. If any other brand or model had issues - cracking or scratchy nib, people would avoid them like the plague, but I see comments like, "My TWSBI skips and doesn't have the best ink flow, but I LOVE IT!" and "My TWSBI cracked, but I'm still using it until I get a new one." So, what's the deal?

12) NoFuture NoHope- Ink Nouveau (33:30):
I have one more: How to use the Kaweco squeeze converter. I have a new Kaweco AC Sport Carbon with the converter, but I cannot get it full no matter how many times I squeeze it.

13) ZhanchiMan- Reddit (36:23):
I'm just gonna say right here, this is an excellent medium to get questions from as well as facebook, youtube, google plus, so on and so forth. Here's my question: If I let an ink dry up in a pen, how can I clean the pen to ensure that there isn't any dried ink left? I let mine sit for a couple of months, and though it didn't dry up completely, my pen did have a rough time trying to start writing.

14) songandrew- Reddit (42:09):
Is it normal for pens to write fatter lines the longer you use them? My 4 year old f nib is writing dangerously close to a medium now, and I can't figure out any other reason than use over time.
